On a recent visit to Pittsburgh, my sister, Linda showed me a little tidbit in the sports section of the Valley News Dispatch (serves communities along the Allegheny River).  During the fall, sports editor George Guido does a nice weekly retrospective of local high school football. In the edition that I saw there was an interesting factoid about high schools that no longer exist. It was called “Gone but not Forgotten” and it listed the 10 winningest WPIAL high schools among all schools that are now defunct.  Number ten on this list was good ole’ BHS.  But the list was based on pure numbers and all of the schools on the list actually played more games than Bellevue, giving them more opportunities for wins. I felt that winning percentage would give a better comparison of excellence, so I computed and added the last column shown below. Lo and behold, the truly winningest school is Bellevue at 56.5%; just ahead of German Twp.

SCHOOL        YEARS            W – L – T          %

Duquesne        1908-2006      488-358-33     55.5%

Ford City          1908-2014     353-451-24     42.6%

Turtle Creek     1903-1986     351-297-41     50.9%

German Twp    1916-1986     348-242-27     56.4%

Midland            1919-1985     322-242-35     53.7%

Swissvale         1904-1986     295-316-38    45.4%
